Week 3 Tuesday

Some information for those of  you who for some reason or other missed today's class.

* Read and listen to the text Gothic in Blueprint C.
* Borrow a novel - the novels to choose among are in the bookshelf behind the librarian's desk.

Reading novels:
On Tuesday week 7 you are going to talk about your novels in groups.
In week 8 - write an analysis of your novel according to a model I'll hand to you.
Thirdly, you will tell about your novels in transversal groups. Thus you will know the stories of five novels by the end of week 9.

Gothic - Pre-reading

Consider the following:

A. Think how emotional and/or reasoning reaction these two situations would bring out for you:

1. Your luggage is too heavy for your air flight, and you need to decide what to leave out.
2. You see your boy/girlfriend kissing someone else.

When you have thought for a moment, compare your thoughts with what a friend has to say. How similar or different are your reactions?

B. Gothic literature evokes the supernatural. Can you think about ghosts, vampires etc. without feeling at all tense?

IDIOMS

How many of these idioms can you get into one sentence?

things that go bump in the night
from the sublime to the ridiculous
at arm's length
cast an eye at

Focus on Listening
Listen to the poem Vampire by Ted Hughes, read by himself.

The Critic's Checklist for Feminism

Center versus margins of power: A woman feels closer to the center of power if she forms a relationship with a violent and powerful man.

On the lookout for patriarchy: A feminist may say that this is self-destructive behaviour, which supports the continuation of male patriarchy.

Stereotypical oppositions between male and female: It is quite a stereotype to suggest that women are more attracted to dangerous but powerful men.

Madonna/whore paradox: On the other hand, the woman who is attracted to a dangerous man has a potential of "saving" him (a Madonna), but her attraction to danger makes her a "whore".

Peer response

After watching your news broadcasts each group will give response to another group.

What is the best thing in the broadcast?
What do you learn from it?
Do you miss anything in their broadcast?
Are the journalistic questions what, who, when, where, why and how used?

Each group shares a document with me including your answers. Write the names of the group members and the name of the group you are giving response to. Group 1 is responsible for the response to group 2 and so on. Finally group 6 - response to group 1.

Group 1. Mohammad's group (The first name in the group)

Group 3. Eric's group
Group 4. Nadja's group
