Winston and Syme converse as Syme is eating. They discuss Syme's brilliant new invention: Newspeak, which is a dictionary designed to destroy words. Syme excitedly explains how much he hates unnecessary words and offers his listener several examples to convince him of Newspeak's importance. Winston, a writer who prefers old, rich language, is sceptical. Syme responds that the future will need thought control. Winston almost mentions the proles, Syme notices. When he elaborates further about the future literature, Winston muses that Syme too will eventually draw too much attention to himself. He might also be too clever for Big Brother.
